One of the best things that happened to my skin is taking a class on how to properly apply skincare products. Over the years I have become very particular about my skincare routine. I am very consistent with the products that I use for my skin care; I feel like if it ain’t broke don’t fix it! Even when I travel I have to have my holy grail skincare products. (Because going on vacation is great, but coming back with blemishes is not.) One thing that really helps me is knowing how to apply skincare products properly. Keep reading to see my current skincare routine and the proper steps to apply your products.
Step 1: Cleanser
This should hopefully not be a surprise first step. For my cleanser, I use the Murad Anti-aging cleanser or the Murad Clarifying Cleanser. These two products have very similar ingredients and work well interchangeably. The Murad Anti-aging cleanser tends to be a little more gentle than the Murad Clarifying Cleanser on my skin.
Step 2: Toner
The next step after you wash your face is to use a toner. I never use to use a toner until I received the Glow Tonic Toner from Pixi in a PR package. Now I don’t feel “right” if I skip this step and my skin looks even better. It helps to brighten, further clean, and prep your skin before makeup or at night.
Step 3: Serums and Sheet mask
Once your face is clean and prepped, you can apply a serum. An alternative to a serum is a sheet mask. Both are concentrated products that usually target a specific skin care concern. For example dark spots or uneven texture. Serums are something that I only started to get into recently and I still do not use every single time I wash my face. I own a few serums, mainly from Murad and Derma e that I alternate trying out. I also have a lot of random sheet mask that I love to test out, especially on the plane! Using a serum makes me feel like I am doing “grown-up” skincare so I have started to incorporate them more often. Make sure you allow your serum to have a minute to soak in completely before the next step.
Step 4: Moisturizer
Last but not least a moisturizer with SPF. As a Black woman, I never thought I needed SPF growing up but all skin tones need SPF. The face, in particular, should have SPF every day. Especially if you use Vitamin C products or Retinoids which make your skin more sensitive to UV rays. In the winter I use a heavier moisturizer like the Olay Regenerist Whip Face Moisturizer SPF 25 or the Murad Anti-Aging Moisturizer SPF 30. In the summer I swear by the Murad Oil-Control Mattifier SPF 15.
When I am traveling or in a rush, I use a BB Cream instead to provide coverage, SPF, and moisture. One example is the IT Cosmetics Your Skin But Better CC+ Cream Oil-Free Matte with SPF 40. I wear the darkest shade in this line and it is still a little “off” so I usually pair it with a darker setting powder, especially if I have tanner summer skin.
And there you have it, how to Properly Apply Skincare Products! These are the correct steps to apply your skincare products to be most effective. Of course, there are always more products that you can add like facial oils and tools. I, however, like to keep my routine fairly simple. Although some of these products cost a lot, they are effective and last for a long time. I usually only purchase my skincare products twice a year!
