The Secret to Successful New Year Resolutions

January 6, 2019

Setting New Year’s Resolutions is a long lasting tradition. Depending on how good you’ve been on keeping up with them in the past, it might be something you look forward to or laugh at the thought of. I love reflecting during January and focusing on new goals, but resolutions tend to be rigid and counterproductive. Instead, each year I set intentions for what I want to prioritize. Last year my intention was to prioritize travel. I ended up traveling in three continents, including a visit to Thailand. This year one of my intentions is to upgrade. While I don’t have an exact vision for what that looks like, so far I’ve already upgraded my phone!

By making resolutions broader, you are more likely to achieve them. Keeping up with your New Year Resolutions is all about how you frame them. Instead of looking at it as a task or goal to check off, view your resolution as a guiding priority. For example, if your resolution is to lose weight, create the intention of fitness or clean eating. Whenever you are considering what to eat or if you should skip a workout, ask yourself how that aligns with your fitness intentions. Below are three more tips to create successful New Year intentions.

  1. Visualize it: Try creating a visual representation of your goals. Looking at a visual cue such as a vision board or a collage on your phone helps to keep your goals at the forefront.
  2. Generalize it: Creating broader intentions for your resolutions helps to make them more attainable.
  3. Revitalize it: Make it a point to check back in with your resolutions monthly or quarterly. Examine where your resolutions are working and where you may need to reaccess.
